Wallace-Crabbe

['wɔlɪs 'kræb], Chris (eigentlich Christopher Keith), australischer Lyriker, * Richmond (Victoria) 6. 5. 1934; lehrte an Universitäten in Großbritannien und den USA; heute an der Universität Melbourne. In seinen formbewussten, von ironisch-distanziertem Ton gekennzeichneten Gedichten befasste er sich zunächst mit Themen des städtischen Lebens (»The music of division«, 1959; »In light and darkness«, 1964); später überwiegen gesellschaftspolitische Themen sowie die Spannung zwischen dionysisch-rauschhafter Lebensfülle und apollinisch-maßvoller Rationalität (»Where the wind came«, 1971; »The foundations of joy«, 1976; »The emotions are not skilled workers«, 1980; »I'm deadly serious«, 1988; »For crying out loud«, 1990).

Weitere Werke: Lyrik: Eight metropolitan poems (1963); Rungs of time (1993).

Literaturkritik: Melbourne or the bush (1974); Toil and spin (1979); Falling into language (1990).

Ausgaben: Selected poems (1973); Selected poems 1956-94 (1995).
